7 people died in a road accident along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Road early Saturday morning, hardly three days after another fatal crash claimed seven lives in Murehwa, raising fears of a looming bloody festive season, which starts tomorrow.
In a statement, national police spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the latest accident involved a Masvingo-bound Munenzva bus. The bus reportedly hit a donkey, veered off the road and rammed into a trailer of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle travelling in the opposition direction.
Five passengers in the smaller vehicle and the driver, died on the spot, while three others were injured and taken to Mwenezi District Hospital, where one died on admission. No passenger in the bus was injured.
“The deceased were taken to Mwenezi District Hospital for post-mortem and their names will be released in due course once their next of kin have been advised. Police are urging drivers to be cautious when driving on the road, especially at night because of poor visibility,” Charamba said.
Police said the Murehwa accident was caused by the driver of a Toyota Vitz vehicle, who lost control of his car and encroached into the opposite lane, leading to side swipe with an Isuzu KB250 truck.
Six people, including the driver of the Toyota Vitz, died on the spot, while one died on admission at Murewa Hospital. Five others were injured and rushed to Murewa Hospital for treatment. The accidents came after police increased their presence on the road in a bid to enforce traffic regulations and reduce the road carnage.
