7 thugs who went on a crime spree in Madlankala Reserve on Sunday evening were given a heavy beating. They terrorised residents of Esikhaleni, near Empangeni by stealing a car, driving recklessly and shooting randomly.
People said the thugs were driving an old 1400 bakkie when they hijacked a Hyundai Getz. They shot the driver in the leg and took the car. A source said there are nine suspects. Seven were admitted to hospital in a critical condition. The others fled and haven’t been found.
“The suspects split into two groups after hijacking the car. Four took the stolen car to Madlankala, where they hid it before going to a tavern. When they got to the tavern they bought beers and cigarettes.
“They started shooting randomly, causing chaos and residents decided to beat them up.”
A Madlankala resident said: “People suspected the car was stolen because it was parked where thugs usually hide stolen cars.”
While the four thugs were boasting at the tavern, the other five drove to Mkhoboza Reserve in the bakkie but they lost control of it and crashed into a gate at a resident’s home.
People managed to catch three of them after the crash and also gave them a taste of people’s justice. Two got away and have not been found yet.
Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said: “A case of carjacking is being investigated by Esikhaleni SAPS. On Sunday at about 8pm, the complainant allegedly was driving in the Mandlankala area when unknown suspects took his vehicle. They were caught and attacked by residents. Seven suspects aged 19–49 were bust and are in hospital under police guard.”
The driver of the hijacked car is also in hospital.
