Federation CANCELS Ladies bodybuilding

The local bodybuilding association has scrapped ladies bodybuilding from its calendar year, replacing it with more feminine activities in order to attract more competitors.

Mainstream ladies bodybuilding has long suffered apathy with many opting for bikini model, bikini fitness and fitness figure among other categories.

In 2014, 48-year-old Wendy Hanssen was the only contestant while last year ,South Africa-based Regina Jonga beat Christina Matange in a field of two participants.

National Federation of Zimbabwe Bodybuilding and Fitness (NZFBF) spokesperson Quiet Shangai said the new dispensation will take effect starting from the bodybuilding contest for beginners, Mr and Ms Novice scheduled for March 26 at the Long Chen Plaza.

“This year, we are not going to have ladies bodybuilding at any competition,” Shangai told the Daily News.

“Ladies bodybuilding has been replaced by ladies physique which includes such categories as model search or bikini model, bikini fitness, figure, fitness and body fitness. At the moment, we do not have ladies who are bodybuilders and at Novice we even struggle with figure, physique etc so hope we would be able to retain many ladies for competitions.”

The Novice contest will this year feature as usual the junior men bodybuilding for those aged below 21, senior men bodybuilding and Mr and Ms Fitness (Open).

Reigning senior men bodybuilding champion Brian Saundombe, junior men bodybuilding champion Ray Mtandari, Marylin Mangoto (Ms Novice Bodybuilding) together with fitness counterparts Shantel Bhatch (Ms Figure) and Shamma Mugava (Mr Fitness) are all expected to grace the occasion as spectators.

“We also have other categories such as powerlifting featuring bench press, deadlift and squats as well as strength and fitness activities incorporating press ups, squats, shoulder and sit ups so it’s going to be an exciting outing to kick-start this year’s bodybuilding.
