MUTARE: A local taxi driver was recently Saturday evening left counting his losses after a conman drove away with his vehicle in a movie style robbery in the suburb of Westlea.
Police confirmed the incident which occurred last Saturday night, saying they have since launched a manhunt for the suspect.
According to police, the suspect hired Ben Muzurawetu, 41, for a trip from city centre to Westlea suburbs.
The suspect introduced himself to Muzurawetu as a sangoma and told him that he wanted to perform a cleansing ritual ceremony at his client`s house.
When they arrived at the purported client’s home, Muzurawetu, stayed behind in the car while the ‘n’anga’ entered into the house.
A few minutes later, the suspect came back and told Muzurawetu that he wanted to buy a few items from the shops to conclude his ritual.
They drove to nearby shops and bought two bottles of Coca-Cola and a pack of chips.
They drove back to the said client`s house and the suspect instructed Muzurawetu to get out of the car and wait for him at the gate so he could exorcise the bad spirits without interference.
The taxi driver complied and the suspect drove into the residence’s yard. After a few minutes the suspect n’anga drove out at speed and left the cab driver at the gate.
Muzarawetu tried to chase after the suspect but failed to catch up. He rushed back to the house where the suspect was allegedly conducting the cleansing ceremony.
The family told that him that the suspect claimed to have come to visit his former boss, not to conduct any cleansing ceremony.
Muzarawetu was told that the suspect claimed he once worked at the house as gardener and offered to buy them some drinks and they agreed although they failed to recognise him.
A report was made to the police who said the suspect remains at large.
“We encourage and urge the public, especially taxi drivers, not to be hired on late hours.
“They should not allow strangers to drive their cars,” warned Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa.
